Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed issues new health law

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Dubai Ruler, has issued Law No. (8) of 2018 on the Dubai Health Authority (DHA)

The new law further enables the DHA to achieve its objectives including regulating medical services in Dubai, enhancing competitiveness and transparency, improving medical services and products based on international best practices and achieving the sector’s objectives according to approved strategic plans.

The law will address the following points:

1. DHA has further responsibilities:
DHA is tasked to devise new strategies for the development of Dubai’s healthcare sector. DHA’s responsibilities to include preparing a comprehensive strategic plan for Dubai’s healthcare sector, conducting studies and surveys to define Dubai’s future needs and matching the results with future investments, licensing and monitoring medical workers and medical facilities according to DHA’s approved regulations, regulating medical education and medical research in collaboration with competent local and international authorities and drafting and developing policies and procedures for the healthcare sector in Dubai.

2. DHA to regulate prices of healthcare services:
Dubai Law 8/2018 will allow the DHA to directly regulate and approve the prices of healthcare services offered by private providers in Dubai to ensure quality medical services.

3. Medical tourism:
The DHA is tasked with boosting and developing the quality of medical tourism and medical education in Dubai. The DHA will collaborate with other public authorities to oversee and increase the development of the medical tourism industry in Dubai.

4. A renewed view on medical Insurance:
The DHA will have the responsibility to manage and ensure the availability of quality medical insurance programmes
